Rene flying the flag for Cool Aza Beel in NZ

Newhaven Park resident sire Cool Aza Beel (NZ) has two of the most prolific members of the 2024/25 2-year-old crop either side of the Tasman with New Zealand-raced Cool Aza Rene virtually emulating the deeds of her half-sibling Cool Archie here in Australia.

Just a week after Cool Archie posted his fifth straight victory of the juvenile season when claiming the Group 1 JJ Atkins Stakes (1600m) at Eagle Farm, Cool Aza Rene recorded win No. 4 by taking out the Bain McCall Memorial 2YO (1000m) at Riccarton at just her fifth career start.

Twice successful earlier in the season, the Newhaven Park bred, raised and sold daughter of Cool Aza Beel has now also landed her two most recent outings — her four seasonal wins only being matched by NZ Group 1 winners Return to Conquer (by Snitzel) and La Dorada (by Super Seth).

Fittingly, Cool Aza Rene competes in the colours of Te Akau Racing who, of course, raced her sire Cool Aza Beel (NZ). The precocious filly was sold to D C Ellis CNZM (BANZ) at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $55,000.

The parallels between Cool Aza Rene and Cool Archie are striking, their collective nine wins making this brace of first-crop Cool Aza Beel runners amongst the most prolific members of the current juvenile division in Australasia.

Indeed, Cool Archie’s feat to record five wins this juvenile season in Australia is only matched by the dual stakes winning filly Sunrays. No other member of the division has been as prolific as the first-crop son of Cool Aza Beel (NZ).

In a posting on the Facebook page of Te Akau Racing, David Ellis remarked: “It’s satisfying to see Cool Aza Rene racing so well and for Cool Aza Beel to have just had his first Group One winner.”

Te Akau Racing’s principal added: “We were thrilled that a great breeder like John Kelly at Newhaven Park Stud bought Cool Aza Beel to stand at stud, and they had a very good opinion of his progeny right from the time they were foals.

“We’ve got some other promising horses in the stable by Cool Aza Beel, that are still to race, and we’ve bred to him each year.”
