Newhaven Park Bred Wylie Hall – Season Update

WYLIE HALL SEASON UPDATE

I never dreamed I’d hear anyone from Cheveley asking me to book over 100 mares to a first season sire at their farm – until now. The previous master of Cheveley, my dear late friend Wilfred was an ardent believer that freshman sires should not cover more than 80 mares. His son Vaughan seemed to endorse that view until Wylie Hall arrived. Now the master of Cheveley has me promising to find a few more mares to push Wylie Hall’s book over the 100 mark.

Leaping through the proverbial hoop during a very enthusiastic call last week and then again at the races last Saturday, Vaughan told me that Wylie Hallis incredibly fertile and can easily handle more mares. I have always been a firm believer in giving freshman sires big books of mares because it’s the only way they can compete in the modern market. We in SA don’t come close to the number of mares that stallions cover in other parts of the world but if any sire wants to compete for the top in SA nowadays he needs both quality and quantity.

Wylie Hall has covered 95 mares with fantastic results. Only 5 are not in foal, 17 are yet to be tested and 73 have been confirmed in foal. If we apply the average of the mares already tested to his overall book he will definitely perform at well over 90%. Well done Vaughan.

My task now as stallion manager is to rise to Vaughan’s challenge and get 5 more mares to give this young son of Redoute’s Choice over 100 this season. He certainly deserves it.

The team have been putting the finishing touches to our new sire book for 2016. It’s a labour of love that I really enjoy. A ton of research goes into updating the info. I always believe that “you can make it better” so I hope you will approve of this new edition. We have some brilliant new pics to show you, especially Tracy Robertson’s new pics of Wylie Hall. Wow, he has taken his season well and is letting down fast. He has this incredible temperament and fantastic body balance. Tracy asked us to get him to gallop around the paddock, which required that we ran around like crazy people waving our arms. He was funny, he responded but would then stop and look at us as if we were mad to be wasting our energy on such a hot day. Sensible chap!

So here is the deal: it’s late in the season. Wylie Hall has covered most of his book, only a few more to go at the moment. If you have a mare that needs covering please call me to talk a deal to help me go over the 100 mark. We will even consider those grand old ladies who battle a bit, give Wylie a try, he is super fertile. We will happily make a deal to suit you.

Wylie Hall is the only Gr1 winning son of his legendary sire at stud outside of Australasia. Redoute’s Choice has over 50 sons at stud, 23 of them have already produced stakes winners and 15 of them have produced Gr1 winners. Imagine that. Wylie Hall’s half brother is a champion sprinter. This is like the script of sire-making credentials.

Wylie Hall’s first book of mares hail from the country’s top breeders and include the likes of Akinfeet, South Africa’s 2013 Broodmare of the Year who was booked to him yesterday. Like Akinfeet, daughters of champion broodmare sire Fort Wood are highly prized. They include the dams of Breeders Cup winner Pluck, Royal Fantasy, Mokoro, Bouquet-Garni, Cherry On The Top, Contador, Thunder Dance and of course Lammerskraal Stud’s Akinfeet; who became the first daughter of Fort Wood to be named South Africa’s Broodmare Of The Year following a year where her sons Across The Ice and Capetown Noir both won graded features.

Michael Leaf, who owned and raced Wylie Hall, has been a significant supporter of this young sire in his first season at stud, sending 20 mares which included:
