November 21, 2025Cool win for Rugby League legend

Newhaven Park bred, raised and sold Cooly lost her maiden status in style when very comfortably landing a Melbourne metropolitan midweek contest staged at Caulfield Heath.
A first-crop daughter of Cool Aza Beel (NZ), Cooly was having just her fourth race start after a series of encouraging performances at Kilmore, Pakenham and Ballarat.
Trained by Peter Moody & Katherine Coleman and perfectly ridden to victory by Luke Nolen, Cooly was positioned on the flank of the leader for the majority of the race before assuming control at the top of the Caulfield Heath straight and then going on to win by a length and three-quarters.
Adding to the widespread interest in the victory was the fact that the legendary Rugby League player and coach Billy Slater is a co-owner of the promising Cool Aza Beel filly.
Cooly was sold by Newhaven Park at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale where she was bought by co-trainer Peter Moody for $180,000. A multi-talented horseman, Slater loved the filly at the sale and subsequently did most of her early education himself.
Speaking after the win, co-trainer Katherine Coleman stated: “She’s done a very good job and it’s pleasing to make her a maiden winner and a city winner all in one hit.
“Billy [Slater] and Pete [Moody] have a great personal and professional relationship and we have a few horses for Billy, so it’s nice to get that win on the board.”
Cooly is the latest notable graduate to emerge from the same Newhaven Park Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale consignment which also included Group 1 winning 2-year-old Cool Archie, Group winning 2-year-old (and Blue Diamond Stakes fourth) The Playwright, and this season’s NZ Group winning 3-year-old Cool Aza Rene.
Cooly is a close relation to the aforementioned Cool Aza Rene. She became the third individual winner of the Redoute’s Choice mare Hittite, a direct descendant of 2002-03 Champion 2YO Filly and dual Group 1 winning juvenile Hasna.
Newhaven Park will offer a full-brother to Cooly at the 2026 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale next February. The fifth foal of Hittite, the colt is catalogued as Lot 65.
