June 18, 2025First-crop Group 1 success for Cool Aza Beel
Resident Newhaven Park sire Cool Aza Beel (NZ) became the first stallion of the 2021 domestic stud intake to be represented by a Group 1 winner when star son Cool Archie scored a stunning victory in the JJ Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm.
Successful at his previous four outings, three of which were coveted Group/Listed events, Cool Archie produced another outstanding performance to score by a length and a quarter — never giving his backers a moment of concern under another flawless ride by regular partner, Martin Harley.
Cool Archie took his record to five straight wins and one Group 3 pre-Christmas placing for earnings of over $1.6 million.
Cool Archie’s winning sequence had more than one thoroughbred news platform presenting a case for the colt to be seriously considered for champion 2-year-old honours.
Black-type Horseracing reported: “According to punters.com.au, this season’s juvenile ranks have lacked a standout until now, with each of the five Group 1 races falling to a different horse. But Cool Archie [Cool Aza Beel] has gone from strength to strength, stringing together wins in the Listed Dalrello Stakes, Group 2 Spirit Of Boom Classic, Group 2 BRC Sires Produce, and now the JJ Atkins to throw down a powerful claim for end-of-season accolades.”
Black-type Horseracing’s item also quoted Cool Archie principal owner Max Whitby as stating: “We feel he has done enough to win that award [Champion 2YO]. He’s an outstanding colt, he’s won from 1000m to 1600m, he’s won on dry and wet tracks; he’s a beauty.”
In an associated item, the Black-type Horseracing platform also opined: “Whatever he [Cool Archie] does or doesn’t do as a 3YO, the son of Newhaven Park Stud’s exciting young stallion Cool Aza Beel, has ironclad reasons for suitors to be offering large sums for him to stand at stud.”
Black-type Horseracing concluded: “Standing for $16,500 inc GST at Newhaven Park for 2025, Cool Aza Beel is obviously outstanding value.”
